BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF SANTA CLARA COUNTY ANNOUNCING ITS COMMITMENT TO PROTECT INDIGENOUS ASSYRIANS IN IRAQ

On November 7, 2023, the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved Resolution BOS-2023-156, expressing its commitment to safeguard the indigenous Assyrian community in Iraq and acknowledging their cultural heritage and pivotal role in shaping Iraq’s future.

The resolution urges Congress, the President, and international partners to provide security and humanitarian aid to the Assyrian community in Iraq.

Additionally, it calls on the Iraqi government to ensure fair treatment of Assyrians, preserve their cultural heritage, promote peaceful coexistence, and protect the property rights of the Assyrian, Chaldean, and Syriac churches.

The resolution advocates for safeguarding Assyrian property rights, particularly in the Nahla Valley and the disputed region of the Nineveh Plain.

The Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors further calls on Congress to assist Assyrian refugees and internally displaced persons, offering resettlement options and support services within Iraq and through U.S. refugee programs. The full-resolution text is available below.
